Small Change Romeos
The wit, charm and down to earth rock n roll spirit of the Small Change Romeos resonates within their music and to audiences on and off the stage. With over 4 years as an integral part of the eclectic San Francisco music scene, the band has established a collection of well crafted, no gimmick, stick in your head songs driven by vocal harmonies and a tapestry of guitars. Their original sound, often termed Swamp-City Rock, blends classic, alternative and roots rock’n roll. They are as fresh as they are nostalgic, often making musical nods to influences such as The Eagles, Stones, Springsteen, The Police, Tom Petty, Wilco and STP.
A rare, dual lead singer-songwriter line up is the main ingredient to the band's uniqueness and diversity. Chris James brings a warm rich vocal, and acoustic touch while Mike Ruy dirties things up a bit with soaring lead playing that gives the band its rock edge. It's a combination that works beautifully and is only enhanced by the dynamic drumming energy of Matt Berg, and the tasty bass playing of new Romeo, Robert Wong.
Having gained notoriety around Northern California, the Romeos have been able to attract many of the area finest musicians to perform on their latest album: Fools Gold . Among them: Dave Rude on guitar (Tesla) Phil Bennet, keyboards (Starship) and J Bowman, guitar (Spearhead). Released independently by Loud American and produced by Brian Bolton the Fools Gold record showcases the Small Change Romeos ability to write and record diverse styles of tunes while somehow bringing them all together into a heart felt, socially conscience and commercially viable rock album.
In addition to building a strong following and connection with fans around the Bay Area and beyond, they have had their music featured in commercials seen on various cable stations like Comcast 11, 26 and CNN and have had their music broadcast on internet, satellite and local radio. They are also a featured act on the ongoing television show SF Sound.
Mike Ruy, Chris James
Mike Ruy and Chris James found themselves joining forces in San Francisco as two distinct personalities with a similar passion for songwriting.
The two compliment each other quite well as they have distinct vocal ranges, guitar styles and come from different backgrounds and influence. Together, they get a chemical reaction of honest, emotional music, lyricism (sometimes with a political slant) unmistakable harmonies and melodic hooks.
As band leaders and front men for Small Change Romeos the two have carved out a solid group of material that has defined a rock band on the verge of commercial success.
They have had their songs featured in commercials seen on various cable stations like Comcast 11, 26 and CNN. They are also a featured act on the ongoing television show SF Sound.
James and Ruy have become so prolific and write in so many styles ranging from Rock, Blues and R&B, to Country that SCR simply doesn't have the cache to perform them all. The two songwriters continue to explore musical possiblities push the boundries of eachother's abilities.
